With iPads and other tablets becoming more commonly used in everyday life, hi-tech gadgets are becoming more and more popular as methods of Alternative Augmentative Communication (AAC).
Many individuals throughout the UK have communication difficulties that prevent them from being able to express themselves fully via their speech or meaningful vocalisations. For example, developmental difficulties such as cerebral palsy or autistic spectrum disorder can prevent an individual from being able to express their immediate needs, wants, ideas and beliefs.
Some specialist services exist to support individuals with AAC needs, with a few being available within the NHS. The ACE Centre in Oxford is a national centre for the provision of AAC to such individuals, due to close in June 2012 from financial pressure and insufficient government funding.
The ACE website (www.ace-centre.org.uk) provides very useful information for parents and carers about how AAC can help individuals with communication difficulties. It has some very informative video case studies that really highlight how AAC can change lives for the better. You can view the videos here: http://www.ace-centre.org.uk/index.cfm?pageid=AE0EBAE0-3048-7290-FE6EEBFCE37F92A5
The videos highlight the huge range of AAC devices available for use. They also demonstrate how the devices can be tailored specifically for each individual, depending on their specific needs, wishes and circumstances. Liberator also have some videos on their website (http://www.liberator.co.uk/) demonstrating use of their LAMP device, designed to increase the ability of individuals with autism to communicate spontaneously.
Numerous apps are also available for tablets and smart phones such as iPads and iPhones that can effectively turn them into functioning AAC devices. These particularly appeal to teenagers and young people because of their current popularity and widespread use.
