What is internet therapy?

ITS are happy to provide speech and language therapy delivered via the internet.

How does it work?

The therapist will call the client on Skype and carry out an observation/assessment or deliver therapy in the same way that they would if they were physically present with the client.

To access therapy online the client will need to set up a Skype account which can be done for free at Skype.com

Who is online therapy suitable for?

In our experience this type of therapy can yield successful results for:

Adults

  • Who enjoy using and are able to sit in front of a computer or laptop
  • Who are able to answer questions about themselves and their needs
  • Who require support to answer questions about themselves and their needs

Adults and their families/carers requiring support for a broad range of needs including

  • Acquired disorders: stroke or head injury
  • Progressive diseases e.g. Parkinsons or Huntingdons disease
  • Long term communication difficulties continuing from childhood e.g. Cerebral Palsy
  • Augmentative and Alternative Communication users

Children

Therapists can observe children via Skype. This may be an observation of normal home interaction e.g. play with siblings. Alternatively it may be a more structured activity such as an assessment carried out by the therapist. Online therapy can also be highly motivating for children who enjoy being able to see the therapist via the computer.

Additionally, the therapist can use this time to discuss the child’s skills and needs with parents. This could include support to develop the following:

  • Attention and listening skills
  • Behaviour management boundaries
  • Language ability
  • Speech sound clarity
  • Oro-motor skills
  • Signing
  • Sentence building
  • Social communication strategies

What are the advantages of online therapy?

It is easily accessible from the comfort of your own home therefore all clients living abroad can access online therapy as well as clients who do not live near to one of our therapists. No travel costs are incurred for the client.

What if I don’t speak English?

If you or your child cannot speak English we will arrange for interpreters to work alongside the therapist to ensure a successful therapy session.
