Teenagers in Sussex are being offered health information and advice through a new app that they can access on their mobile phones. The NHS already use social media to try and reach these groups, but it is felt that an app is a more private way for the teenagers to access health information. The app is free to teenagers in the Sussex area and can be used to access information that teenagers may otherwise be embarrassed to ask face to face. It can also be accessed at any time from any place, which means that the teenagers do not need to make specific appointments or wait for specific opening hours to get the advice that they need.

Technology moves at a quick pace, and it can sometimes be tricky to keep up. Apps in particular have become increasingly popular in recent years and been used for a vast range of purposes and genres costing anything from a few pence to hundreds of pounds; some can even be downloaded for free. Speech therapists have been able to access apps to assist their clients during the assessment and therapy process, as well as alternative communication devices for some time now. As interest grows in Apps, it becomes easier for our clients to access technology that would previously have been both niche and expensive. As professionals it is our responsibility to work with our clients and find the approach that fits best with their lives and their ways of working and communicating. If we fail to move with the way that our clients work, then we fail to assist them and provide them the quality of service that they need. We essentially alienate them. It is also our responsibility to analyse and critique the apps that our clients enquire about so that we can safely say with professional integrity that the app does what it intends to and has an appropriate amount of research behind it in order to deliver what we hope of it. At  we use technology cautiously and appropriately; we put time and effort into finding the technology and approaches that are the perfect fit for each of our individual clients.
